If you’ve been considering replacing your home furnace, there may not be a better time than the present. That’s because right now, there are amazing rebates and incentives available on residential heating systems. This fall, for instance, you’ll be able to purchase select heating systems that will save you now as well as in the future on your utility bills.

One of the biggest reasons, though, that you might want to consider a new heating system this fall is the 2013 Furnace Efficiency Law, a new Department of Energy ruling that will impose elevated minimum standards and regional standards for HVAC appliances. The new standards will take effect on May 1st, 2013 – making this fall the ideal time to consider a new heating system.

Under the new law, non-weatherized furnaces for residences, as well as mobile home gas furnaces, are required to be at least 90% efficient. This law affects New Jersey, and most of the northern states across the U.S.

By installing a new furnace before the law goes into effect, you’ll be able to:

  • Still install an 80% efficient chimney-vented furnace, which typically lasts 20 years with proper maintenance.
  • Purchase lower-priced equipment. The cost of an 80% efficient chimney-vented furnace is much less than a 90% efficient direct vent furnace.
  • Save big on installation costs. The 80% chimney-vented furnace installs the same way as your existing heating system, which reduces installation costs. Comparatively, a 90% efficient furnace requires venting out the side of the house (sometimes through finished rooms, if your heating system is located in the interior of your home) and in many cases requires lining of the chimney or replacement of your hot water heater.
